“I wrote a book.  What’s the next step?”

Any type of help is welcome, sooner or later at this point, and the answer to the question above is obvious, as much as the question is non-equivocal in itself.

We accept manuscripts from beginners and published authors alike.

The next lines will serve as a quick initiate’s guide, hoping it will usher your steps towards your end purpose: publishing a book.


1.Sending and appraising a book.

The first step after you finished writing the last chapter of the book is to have it noticed by a publishing house.

Velvet Story is willing to evaluate manuscripts sent in Word format (*.doc), that have diacritical marks, along a synopsis of one page at most, while specifying the literary genre. The author’s CV and a contact number are also required.

The material we receive will be assessed by the Velvet Story publishing house team, after which the author will be contacted by e-mail, in a time frame of 30 to 60 working days, depending on the content weight.

We only accept full manuscripts (already finished).

If the book is accepted towards publishing (fitting in the publishing house’s parameters), the author will be contacted for a further discussion with the editor (via phone or e-mail).

If the book is not accepted, Velvet Story PH reserves the right to not disclose the cause of rejection, and it’s required to erase all personal information regarding the author, that has been stored in the data base so far.

2. Editing

The editor will contact you for a first chat. You will be briefed on various info you need to have knowledge of. For example: Before being published, every book needs to be edited, which means it needs to be in the optimal condition for it to be published, regarding the book market’s standards.

Even if you are the most amazing writer there is, you still need someone to remove the rough edges, typing errors and put everything together in a book format; If changes need to be made on text, narration, dialogue, defining chapters, and generally the proper development of the manuscript, will have a major impact on the sales market, buyers and readers.

Also, we bring up the issue of choosing a format, a font, the type of paper used, number of pages, book cover, number of books printed, so on. Depending on all these aspects, you will receive a price offer.

The publishing house ensures fair prices for deciding on the number of printed books, printing press, quality, additional costs, required time, etc.

If the author agrees and accepts the publishing house’s terms and conditions, proceeding to the next step will be in effect – Signing a confidentiality/rights contract with the PH.

After that, the actual work on the book itself begins.


3. Wording / Proofreading / Stylization

After the required modification, the book goes to an official editor for appraisal.  Any author at some point starts going with the flow of its own creation, focusing on the narrative aspects. The editor will spot any changes that need to be made to the manuscript, and communicate them to the author. (text flowability, action, phrase construction, logic, characters, chapter order, book ending.)


Stylizing I:

 A first change will be made by the author, for being the one who knows best what he created and the intention he did it with.


The book is evaluated by a qualified editor.  One who will ‘’clean’’ and set up the text, so it ends up to be a proper quality book. Correcting typing errors, topic, punctuation, repetitions, duplicate words, even expressions that make no sense. The editor has no impact on changing the style nor the message of the book, but tries to highlight narration and good text exposure.

What Is a qualified editor? A person with a master’s degree in linguistics (usually a professor), philologist, text expert. We offer high end proper wording and proofreading services.


Stylizing II:

After the manuscript has had its ‘’style’’ defined by the editor, it is sent back to the author for appraisal.  If everything is in order, the next step is at hand.


4. Desktop Publishing


Desktop publishing refers to the technical preparation of the manuscript, before it’s sent for printing, and it’s made within established rules and parameters.  Book paging – depending on the size, graphics, font size and format. For a book that also has illustrations, imagery and colors are important aspects.

5. Book cover

Designing the book cover and what is shown on it go according to the PH’s standards. If you can’t come up yourself with a cover that fits the required parameters, we offer professional design services. We will create two versions of the cover, and the author will choose between them. (he can express his preferences regarding the characters, text font and colors, used on the cover). Depending on the requirements of the book / the story, certain images can be license bought. (The price of the cover changes accordingly, if the image was purchased). The same treatment is applied to the cover if the image is available to be used by the publishing house. Based on these aspects, we prefer to use covers made by our graphic designers, so no issue involving copyright infringement arises A nicely done book cover, has a certain impact on the reader, making it one of the key elements to selling the book. First blush is important, so the picture, text positioning, author’s name, fonts, etc., play an important role.

6. 4th Cover Text Creation Process

The text on the 4th cover has a major impact on the manuscript’s sales. It can be a synopsis or a text made by one of our Velvet Story editors.


The PH will provide the ISBN also the CIP. Before being published, the title will receive a CIP description, that will help with the promotion of the book in various libraries.

8. Verifying and preparing documents for printing


Before being sent to the printing press, the book (cover included) must be given the author’s seal of approval.

9. Distribution

The book will be merchandised on the PH’s website and the online libraries within partnership. Or via direct sales – book releases, book fairs.

Also, in case of commercial distribution, there are certain rebates, taxes, promotional offers, etc. demanded by the retailers and distributers.

According to all the data and information regarding the production price of a book, along other editorial expenses, the PH decides the price at which the book will be sold. The price will be furtherly passed to the distribution network.

10. Promoting the book & author

Once it hits the distribution market. the book must benefit from a good promotion, hence a good impact on sales.

Velvet Story PH provides its authors with blog reviews, contests, book releases, various events and online promo.

A big plus is the participation of the actual author to certain events (like book signings), where hand to hand contact with the readers will certainly embellish sales.

Once the title has been published, it’s recommended that the author will try to also promote his book on its own, aside from the PH, enhancing sales exposure. No book, regardless of how good it is, will catch the eye of the readers without direct involvement from the author. The PH is no miracle worker.

We know you are eager to see your book published, but you must understand this is a delicate process that requires hard work, focus and attention. Velvet Story publishing house focuses on quality, not quantity. From the moment the contract has been signed, and the one where the book is released, the process could take up to 5-6 months, depending on the amount of work required.

This small publishing guide, is in no way tiring.  The PH is open for ideas and proposals.
